Skipping… School y’all! Last weekend, we took a road trip to eastern Nebraska to visit my sister, soak in the cuteness of my 9 month old nephew, and view the eclipse in its totality. For all this fun, the little guy skipped his 3rd day of kindergarten. Totality worth it!

Mastering: Seriously, I am on the opposite end of the spectrum from mastering.

Climbing: (nada)

Encouraging: We have expectations for behavior for our 5 yr old son; good manners, respect, and choosing to do the right thing. Lately when he falls short, it feels like we’ve been heavy on the correction and light on the encouragement. Trying to bring it back into balance.

Modeling: My sister is a talented photographer and took some shots of me “modeling” a couple of outfits that you’ll see on the blog in September for the Sew Long Summer blog tour.

Solving: Had to solve the question: How to draw an equilateral triangle. I couldn’t jog my memory of high school geometry, so thank you google for having all the answers.

Hanging: There was a lot of hanging out going on. Hanging at the park with friends, hanging at home for a few hours while the little guy was at VBS, and hanging at the water park having fun.

Teaching: I was happy to turn over the little guy to the wonderful ladies and gents that put on VBS at church this week. I’m still trying to figure out what he’s talking about when he says Jesus got mad at the ten Gideons and made them disappear. He had a great time.

Remembering: I had to complete my continuing ed and testing to renew my insurance license this week. It’s all about remembering boring facts that rarely have practical application to what I actually do. Blarg.

Restoring: This week has seen the restoration of an old habit that isn’t a particularly good one. I put myself on a fabric buying diet this year and have been doing well with it. This week though, I purchased about 10 yards, most of which will just go into the stash until fall. Here’s hoping to getting back on the wagon.

Tweeting: I don’t tweet myself, but I’ve been enjoying the music the birds around our home have been making. I like to think the momma bird nesting on the pergola over our patio is singing along to her soon to be babies.

Raising: Our little guy just turned five. Celebrating his birthday and some other reminders have me very mindful of enjoying him now at this age before he actually turns into the man we’re hoping to raise.

Giving: My husband normally gives a week of volunteer time as a counselor for Royal Family Kids Camp; helping foster kids in our county have a week of fun, encouragement, and love. This year he couldn’t do a week because of jury duty, but was able to help for one day where they throw a huge birthday party for all the kids.

Illustrating: This week I sketched out a basic plan for the huge garden bed in our back yard. The bed is about 5 feet deep and 120 feet long, totally overrun by weeds, and completely daunting to me. I’m trying to be realistic about getting it filled with perennials that will take care of themselves.

Restoring: ??

Writing… Well I stink at writing and sending cards, but this week the little guy and I made some holiday cards.

Quitting… I’ve been making a concerted effort to unsubscribe from email lists. No need to get all these emails from places I maybe use once a year.

Fixing… It seems like there has been a lot of fixing going on lately around the house: replacing the over the range microwave, replacing a glow plug in our diesel VW (hubby’s accomplishment), glueing trim down on the night stand. It feels like we are sliding into entropy.

Celebrating… A small celebration this week as we had a Day Date while the little guy was in preschool.  The Star Wars: Power of Costume exhibit at Denver Art Museum was really cool. We dined at our favorite Indian restaurant for lunch and watching Rogue One in a movie theater. Sweat!

Updating… The approaching tax season always reminds me that I need to file away that stack of documents. I need a new system. I hate filing, so it all just gets chucked onto a pile that doesn’t get put away forever.

Searching… for a solution. Our barely three year old microwave broke beyond fixing and newer models won’t fit into the space without removing tiles from our backsplash. We are not home DIYers, so…ugh.

Relying… on my hubby. It’s time to find a kindergarten and I don’t know if it’s laziness or I just can’t deal, but I can’t bring myself into the tedium of researching schools. So happy that the daddy is doing the work and doing it well.

Addressing… It’s been one of those weeks where there are a lot of tasks to be done and we’ve been addressing those.

Praising…in my heart my aunt B and her granddaughter. They’re joining the Women’s March on Washington this weekend. It’s noteworthy that someone who has never done anything like it, is moved to be have their voice be heard. They’ll be the ones in pink fur “kitty” hats.

Singing…

Picking:  This week the Sew Alongs and Sewing Contests facebook group announced the next Seasonal Sew Wardrobe contest and it is a great theme: sewing eight items from our Deep Stash of patterns. Picking the first 6 of 8 patterns to use was easy, since I had those planned out already, but I have a list of about 6 things to narrow down for the last two pieces.

Telling: I’m in that phase where I am telling my little guy the same instructions over and over again. These are longstanding family rules of conduct that seem to evaporate from his knowledge immediately. Geesh.

Debating: I guess I’m debate free this week.

Mixing: I’m getting all mixed up this week with blog plans. I’m preparing for two blog tours that I will participate in for January while planning two of my own for spring. Switching back and forth gets confusing.

Humming: Thank you Pandora for stirring up many old memories.

Sunday Lately Architectural

Sunday Lately is normally a way for me to share a little more about myself using the prompts provided by the Blogger Tribe.

November was a tough month for my family, so taking inspiration from the Complaints Choir,  I’m going to use today’s post as a mental health exercise instead.

Let the complaints begin.

My brother died unexpectedly early this month. We’ve been grieving and trying to get over the shock of it. I’m in a general malaise and everything just feels like a chore and going through the motions.

On the topic of illness: There have been a total of seven days this month that I have not been sick; about the same for my husband but he had the added trouble of breaking a toe while we were out-of-state for my brother’s funeral and later some sort of conjunctivitis. Our little guy got all the same colds as us, but miraculously got over them in a matter of days. Almost all of my extended family got a nasty, long lingering cold while we gathered to mourn my brother.

Our Thanksgiving gathering evaporated. With our family being sick and my in-laws being sick, the day was a no-go. Since our day was caput, my husband volunteered to work, so a co-worker could be home. It’s pretty depressing to watch about family gatherings and holiday meals when you’re not with family and eating leftover pizza.

For good measure let’s add on a lot of little annoying things going wrong that normally roll off your back, but pile on when you already feel beaten down. For example; the kitchen sink that’s threatening to break loose because of a bad install and is propped up by a croquet mallet until we can get a guy over to fix it, or the new set of tires that are jokingly referred to as my Christmas present.

Song over. Do I feel better? Only slightly. Thanks for listening.
