Sew Long Summer, Hello Astoria and Pirate Pencil

I say Sew Long Summer by sewing up new fall outfits. My newest outfit is the Astoria Sweater from Seamwork Magazine and the Pirate Pencil Skirt from Patterns 4 Pirates.

I knew they would make a colorful fall outfit that I can also leverage for my business casual office. (Oh hey, keep reading to learn about the Sew Long Summer blog tour)

The Astoria

This is my first time trying a pattern from Seamwork magazine. My first impression of the Astoria was it’s overkill of information except for an accurate description of the two versions. I had to dig to find that the versions are long sleeve and 3/4 sleeve. (The 3/4 sleeve descriptor is actually on the pattern piece inventory- nowhere else) I made a straight size Med per my measurements and I’d say it’s a good fit.

The Pirate Pencil Skirt

The Pirate Pencil is a free pattern, but is not lacking in the time and effort put into regular quality patterns. My only critique is that the print instructions don’t have you print pages 18 & 23 for the above knee version. You will need them. The only thing I’d change is adding a little length for next time.

I used stash fabrics to make both pieces; a striped ponte knit to make up the Pirate Pencil and a textured double knit for the Astoria.

Thanks for reading today.

Sew Long Summer, Hello Michelle & Robinson

I say Sew Long Summer by sewing up new fall outfits. My newest outfit is the Michelle Cardigan from DG Patterns* and the Robinson Trousers from Ensemble Patterns. Both of these hit my sewing list way back in the spring when I first saw the Michelle pattern at its release and then I won the Robinson Trouser pattern in a facebook group. I knew they would be a perfect fall outfit. (Oh hey, keep reading to learn about the blog tour and GIVEAWAY!)

The Michelle

I chose a sweater knit from The Fab Clique to make my Michelle cozy for fall. I’m really liking this reddish color on me.

I started with a size 10, per the sizing chart, but ended up sizing it down to an 8 from the waist up. It’s a roomy fitting top so you may want to choose your size with that in mind.

I do have a little tip on the Michelle construction. When you fold up the front curved hem there is a slight gap (shown in blue) between the hem allowance and the side seam. In most knits this probably isn’t a problem, but in the sweater knit it created a weak point between the side seam and the upturned hem. To avoid this you can stretch the fabric in the hem allowance to be caught in the side seam or you can include an extra tab of fabric when cutting to make sure the hem allowance reaches the side seam.

The Robinson Trousers

I used a lightweight (6-7oz) stretch denim from deep in my stash for the Robinsons and boy do I wish I could photograph black better so you could really see them.

The designer has combined comfort and style in the Robinsons. The elastic waistband and easy fit are paired with a faux fly, nice sized front slash pockets, optional patch pockets for the back, and several finishing options at the ankle to make these more than a simple pair of pull on pants.

I chose to make the exposed zipper and tab closure at the ankle ’cause that’s just my style. I think they look pretty cool.

Sew Long Summer…hello Butterick 6388 sweater dress

I say Sew Long Summer with French terry and cold weather dresses.

This fall’s dress is Butterick 6388. It was a hit with me the first time I saw the pattern. The top and dress views are packed with the details I like: a collar to keep me warm, interesting design lines in the bodice, and a slight dolman sleeve.

The pattern is very easy to make and went together in less than 2 hours cut to finish. The dress is so comfortable and I see it working very well as a wardrobe piece that will work in the fall with flats and with tights and boots in the winter.  I have a top version planned in another french terry in my stash, but I might keep my eyes open for an interesting sweater knit to use.

As always, thanks for reading today.

From Blue Dot Patterns I’m wanting another Ally Skirt in red. I love cotton sateen, but a fine corduroy would be cool weather appropriate.

Sew Long Summer featuring Diane of Two Chicklets

Please welcome Diane from Two Chicklets to mahlicadesigns today. It’s a delight to be acquainted with Diane through sewing groups on facebook; she’s a prime example of the wonderful people in the sewing community with her good sense of humor and helpful spirit.

Thank you, Melissa, for inviting me to be a guest on your blog. When I saw the Sew Long Summer group on FB, I remembered it from last year and thought I was signing up to see the blog posts. Little did I know what I was getting myself in for! Some day or year I’ll figure out blogging for myself. Actually it’s been fun though, and I hope you hang around to see what Sew Long Summer means to everyone else on the tour!

IMG_4229

There were many patterns that I didn’t get sewn before leaving for our vacation this summer, so it took lots of mulling before I decided what I wanted to sew. I ended up deciding on Lady Topas since I’ve had the pattern for quite a while (probably more than a year). I found it at Mialuna24.com and it’s a free one to try. Yay, bonus! It comes in sizes XS-XXL with fabric requirements of 60cm-105cm of 140cm wide. This top from my closet is one I love and is almost the same style. So why not have another to love!

Diane's closet sample

Choosing fabric was easy, I knew I wanted to use this happy stripe that I bought at Joann’s last summer, and decided it needed a solid for the curved pieces.

IMG_4234

But then…oh no, the pattern (and the instructions) are in German! My teen son is taking German at school this year as his language choice, but school just started. He probably won’t be learning sewing terms anyway, lol. During open house, when I met his teacher, she encouraged all of the parents to learn German along with their child so we could quiz them before tests, etc. She gave us a website to go to and I started the next day. Wellll, needless to say I haven’t learned enough German to read the instructions, and the translator app my son downloaded for me didn’t help much either. Hallo, Ich bin Diane (hello, I am Diane) and I am in trouble!

IMG_4223

Good thing the top is pretty basic with few pieces. I measured the bodice piece to help decide which size to make after looking at the chart.

IMG_4224

I was able to figure out most of the directions by looking at the pictures (yay for great pics)! There were a couple of times when I wasn’t sure and was able to use the app. One thing I didn’t know, at least until it was too late, is that the seam allowance is not included. Oops! At least there is enough ease that my top still fits!

Diane's collage

Even with the language barrier, I cut and sewed up my top in an afternoon. And wow, was it ever worth the hassles I had! I love this top! It is a relaxed fit, comfortable to wear, and the thin straps are perfectly placed to cover my bra straps. I even love the way my soft knit drapes just right. I love the dress version in the inspiration photos so I may just have to make another. After all, living in Phoenix means that our summer goes on long after school starts! Sew Long and so long!

Zircon Sweater for Sew Long Summer

I’m saying Sew Long Summer by dusting off my fall sewing wish list and making it happen.

One of the projects on the top of my list was to make another Zircon Sweater from Paprika Patterns. The inserts on the Zircon let me have two of my favorite things; geometric shapes and high contrast colors.

I’ve made the Zircon before, so I knew no alterations were needed. Take note that the Zircon sleeve is supposed to be bracelet length, but hits my shorty self right at the wrist were I prefer it.

Those inserts might look scarey to make correctly, but if you follow the directions and take your time to line up the stitching lines, you’ll be good to go.

Melissa Cardigan for Sew Long Summer

I say Sew Long Summer by getting my cool weather clothes ready.  For me, staying warm as it cools down is all about layers. I used to wear fleece vests around the house, but I’m replacing them with cardigans for a more put together look that I can wear out of the house too.

I dig a dolman sleeve because they don’t bunch up under my arms and an open front cardigan because I don’t have to fiddle with buttons. I’m not a big fan of the drappy front cardigans though, they just look a little too sloppy.

It’s almost like Zeirstoff Patterns made the Melissa Cardigan pattern for me. (We even share a name, just sayin’) I get a roomy cardigan that doesn’t look sloppy and feels great to wear.

I just love how this fits me. The only alteration needed was to shorten the sleeve by 3in, pretty typical for me. Since this is a pieced dolman, I removed 1.5in from the outer edge of the dolman and 1.5in from the top edge of the sleeve portion to keep the seam just below my elbow.

The gals at Zierstoff Patterns gave me a copy of the Melissa Cardigan last February to try out, but I had to put it aside until this fall. I liked it so much I asked them to be a Sew Long Summer sponsor. You can pick up a copy of the Melissa or another pattern from our sponsors using one of the discount codes below.

We especially liked how well the jumpsuit fit and that big smile reveals how happy her daughter is with it.

The winner of the Jasper Sweater pattern for our Fabulous Fall Contest is Maartje from huisje boompje boefjes.

We especially liked the color combination, and creative piecing to make this dress a great fall piece.

Winners, watch your inbox so we can get you those prizes.

Thank you all for following along and participating in Sew Long Summer.

Holi-Daze Wrap Up

Holi-Daze week has come to an end. It was fun to see the variety in what we’re making.

Some of my favorites are:

Ashley’s Crepe dress

Cindy’s cape

And now for a reminder, we have just a few more days to enter your items for the Fabulous Fall week contest.
