Please welcome Diane from Two Chicklets to mahlicadesigns today. It’s a delight to be acquainted with Diane through sewing groups on facebook; she’s a prime example of the wonderful people in the sewing community with her good sense of humor and helpful spirit.
Thank you, Melissa, for inviting me to be a guest on your blog. When I saw the Sew Long Summer group on FB, I remembered it from last year and thought I was signing up to see the blog posts. Little did I know what I was getting myself in for! Some day or year I’ll figure out blogging for myself. Actually it’s been fun though, and I hope you hang around to see what Sew Long Summer means to everyone else on the tour!
There were many patterns that I didn’t get sewn before leaving for our vacation this summer, so it took lots of mulling before I decided what I wanted to sew. I ended up deciding on Lady Topas since I’ve had the pattern for quite a while (probably more than a year). I found it at Mialuna24.com and it’s a free one to try. Yay, bonus! It comes in sizes XS-XXL with fabric requirements of 60cm-105cm of 140cm wide. This top from my closet is one I love and is almost the same style. So why not have another to love!
Choosing fabric was easy, I knew I wanted to use this happy stripe that I bought at Joann’s last summer, and decided it needed a solid for the curved pieces.
But then…oh no, the pattern (and the instructions) are in German! My teen son is taking German at school this year as his language choice, but school just started. He probably won’t be learning sewing terms anyway, lol. During open house, when I met his teacher, she encouraged all of the parents to learn German along with their child so we could quiz them before tests, etc. She gave us a website to go to and I started the next day. Wellll, needless to say I haven’t learned enough German to read the instructions, and the translator app my son downloaded for me didn’t help much either. Hallo, Ich bin Diane (hello, I am Diane) and I am in trouble!
Good thing the top is pretty basic with few pieces. I measured the bodice piece to help decide which size to make after looking at the chart.
I was able to figure out most of the directions by looking at the pictures (yay for great pics)! There were a couple of times when I wasn’t sure and was able to use the app. One thing I didn’t know, at least until it was too late, is that the seam allowance is not included. Oops! At least there is enough ease that my top still fits!
Even with the language barrier, I cut and sewed up my top in an afternoon. And wow, was it ever worth the hassles I had! I love this top! It is a relaxed fit, comfortable to wear, and the thin straps are perfectly placed to cover my bra straps. I even love the way my soft knit drapes just right. I love the dress version in the inspiration photos so I may just have to make another. After all, living in Phoenix means that our summer goes on long after school starts! Sew Long and so long!
